Germany to Denmark train ferry

Passengers at Luebeck Hauptbahnhof

The Danish and German governments this week agreed to go ahead with a planned fixed link between Puttgarden and Rødby, which will replace the current “Vogelfluglinie” train ferry service.

This seemed as good a time as any to upload a couple of articles I wrote for Eagle, the journal of the Cambridge University Railway Club, about a trip from Hamburg to Copenhagen via the train ferry service, and a brief visit to a corner of Sweden.

Grenoble ticket machine thinks it’s in Croydon

Grenoble tram ticket machine message

Visting the French city of Grenoble back in May 2005, I was impressed to discover that the ticket machines on the tram stops offer an English language option. As I don’t speak French, this was rather useful.

Unfortunately, after buying a ticket in English, the display says that Croydon Tramlink wishes you a good journey!

Croydon Tramlink wishes you a good journey

The the unofficial Croydon Tramlink website has oodles of information about Croydon Tramlink, and its ticketing systems – presumably Grenoble used the same software!

Dubai’s first ‘metro’ – article on railways in Dubai

PMV website screenshot

Test running on the Dubai Metro has started in the past few days, inspiring a publication called PMV to look at the previous railways of Dubai.

The article, dated May 13 2008, is called Dubai’s first ‘metro’ and is based on my Railways in the United Arab Emirates page.

Most of the details were supplied to me by Eljas Pölhö and Thomas Kautzor (who also took the pictures), and so they deserve a credit.

Today’s Railways on Bulgarian narrow gauge

Bulgarian narrow gaige train
The May 2008 issue of Today’s Railways magazine has an interesting article on the Septemvri – Bansko – Dobrinishte line in Bulgaria; “The Rhodope Mountains route. BDZ’s last narrow gauge line” by Chris Bailey.

In summer 2006 I did the route as part of a holiday trip to Bulgaria, and subsequently wrote an article about the narrow gauge line.
