Photos of 2004 Denge sound mirror guided walk

Hywel Williams took some photographs on a guided walk to the Denge sound mirrors on 4 August 2004: Denge Sound Mirrors – “The Listening Ears”.

I could hear the little steam train pass across in front of me off the sound mirror, GREATLY magnified in sound and apparently in the mirror direction it was traveling. Clearly not a demonstration of aeroplane detection, but also a clear demonstration that these concrete mirrors still work, nearly 80 years after their experimental construction!

Ooo, I’m in one of the photos!

Hywel also has a rather good site about Disused stations on London’s Underground.

2010 guided walks to the Denge sound mirrors

Likely dates for public access to the Denge mirrors have been announced on the website of the Romney Marsh Countryside Project. Remember, this is the only way to visit the Denge mirrors.

SUMMER 2010 VISITS TO THE SOUND MIRRORS

The sound mirrors are only accessible on one of our guided tours and we have been leading free tours out to the Sound Mirrors for 13 years now. They are on an island, connected by a locked swing bridge on a private gravel workings (owned by CEMEX). The dates for 2010 have yet to be published in our booklet, however they are most likely to be as follows: An Open day from 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday 18th July Guided walks starting at 2 pm on Sunday 8th August and Sunday 26th September. The walks and the Open Day are free of charge and there is no need to book, although we do ask for a donation. The meeting point will be at Lade car park on Coast Drive (half way between the Pilot Pub and Romney Sands) (TR 085 208). Please contact us for more information if needed. Sound mirror open day 19 July 2009

Just a reminder about this weekend’s open day at the Denge sound mirrors, organised by the Romney Marsh Countryside Project:

Due to the overwhelming popularity of last years Echoes of the Sky tours we are making a few changes this year. We will be holding a new open day on Sunday 19th July. The island will be open from 10am in the morning until 5pm. Dr Richard Scarth, an expert on these structures, will be present to answer any questions. The Sound Mirrors are located on private land and this is the only way in which they can be accessed. We will have a number of staff stationed at key places to help direct people to the island. There will a member of staff on the bridge asking for a £2 donation per person to cover costs. Parking is available at Lade car park, opposite Taylor Road on Coast Drive (halfway between the Pilot Pub and Romney Sands) (TR 085 208). This will be a non-booking event, you just need to turn up on the day. The walk will be across shingle. For anymore details contact the Romney Marsh Countryside Project

2008 guided walks to the Denge sound mirrors

Guided walk to the 30 foot sound mirror at Dungeness

The Romney Marsh Countryside Project is running three guided walks to the Denge sound mirrors in the gravel pit near Lydd-on-Sea over the summer.

This year’s walks are planned for Sunday 13 July, Sunday 17 August and Sunday 14 September 2008.

They will be led by Dr Richard Scarth, author of the book “Echoes From The Sky”, and are your only chance to see the three mirrors close up.

ECHOES FROM THE SKY

A rare opportunity to visit the Sounds Mirrors of Lade Pit. The walk will be led by Dr Scarth, the world’s expert on sound mirrors, who will tell the fascinating story behind them. Meeting point is at 2pm in Lade car park on Coast Drive (approximately half way between the Pilot Pub and Romney Sands) (TR 085 208). It is free of charge but donations are appreciated. No booking is required.

Obviously you should check the details with RMCP before travelling, but it is well worth the effort of getting down there.

2007 guided walks to the Denge sound mirrors

Because they are on an island surrounded by the waters of a deep gravel pit, the sound mirrors at Denge are only accessible on guided walks (believe me, this is true, I’m not making it up!).

Dates of guided walks are listed on the Romney Marsh Countryside Project website. I’ve been twice, and the “Echoes from the Sky” walks, led by Dr Scarth, author of the now out-of-print book and world expert on acoustic mirrors, are well worth doing – and very popular. Getting there by public transport requires a bit of planning, but is possible. Alternatively, the walks start from a large car park.
