Last Denge sound mirror guided walk of 2008

Sunday 14 September is the final chance in 2008 to visit the Sounds Mirrors at Lade Pit, near Dungeness.

The walk will be led by Dr Scarth, the world’s expert on sound mirrors and author of the book Echoes from the Sky, who will tell the fascinating story behind them.

The meeting point is at 2pm in Lade car park opposite Taylor Road on Coast Drive, approximately half way between the Pilot Pub and Romney Sands (grid reference TR 085 208).

There is no charge, but donations are appreciated. No booking is required.

See the Romney Marsh Countryside Project website for details.

Sound mirror on Bass Communion album

A correspondent e-mails to say that he first discovered the sound mirrors when he saw pictures on the CD booklet/cover art of a Bass Communion album. They are great images, done by Carl Glover of Aleph Studios, showing a view up the 200 foot mirror at Denge.
Bass Communion album cover
Bass Communion is a project by Steven Wilson, leader of the band Porcupine Tree. According to the Bass Communion website, it specialises in recordings in an ambient and/or electronic vein, sometimes in collaboration with other artists. Most of the pieces are experiments in texture made from processing recordings of real instruments and field recordings.

The March 2003 album Bass Communion (remixed) contains Reconstructions and recycling of Bass Communion music by artists from the experimental, electronic and ambient music scenes.

2008 guided walks to the Denge sound mirrors

Guided walk to the 30 foot sound mirror at Dungeness

The Romney Marsh Countryside Project is running three guided walks to the Denge sound mirrors in the gravel pit near Lydd-on-Sea over the summer.

This year’s walks are planned for Sunday 13 July, Sunday 17 August and Sunday 14 September 2008.

They will be led by Dr Richard Scarth, author of the book “Echoes From The Sky”, and are your only chance to see the three mirrors close up.

ECHOES FROM THE SKY

A rare opportunity to visit the Sounds Mirrors of Lade Pit. The walk will be led by Dr Scarth, the world’s expert on sound mirrors, who will tell the fascinating story behind them. Meeting point is at 2pm in Lade car park on Coast Drive (approximately half way between the Pilot Pub and Romney Sands) (TR 085 208). It is free of charge but donations are appreciated. No booking is required.

Obviously you should check the details with RMCP before travelling, but it is well worth the effort of getting down there.

Mirrors from the railway

Last weekend I went down to the 80th anniversary celebrations at the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, and in passing confirmed that it is possible to get a distant glimpse of the 200′ listening ear at Denge from a train, if you know where to look.

The Hythe mirror is rather more clearly visible, and is shown in the background of a painting of the RH&DR’s armoured train which is being sold as a postcard.

2007 guided walks to the Denge sound mirrors

Because they are on an island surrounded by the waters of a deep gravel pit, the sound mirrors at Denge are only accessible on guided walks (believe me, this is true, I’m not making it up!).

Dates of guided walks are listed on the Romney Marsh Countryside Project website. I’ve been twice, and the “Echoes from the Sky” walks, led by Dr Scarth, author of the now out-of-print book and world expert on acoustic mirrors, are well worth doing – and very popular. Getting there by public transport requires a bit of planning, but is possible. Alternatively, the walks start from a large car park.

More sound mirror art

An e-mail informs me of the following event.

10th Disinformation solo exhibition
“Fire in the Eye” + “The Origin of Painting” “The Analysis of Beauty” + “Blackout”

The exhibition features “Blackout” – Barry Hale’s highly influential (and frequently copied) video of monolithic, concrete air-defence Sound Mirrors.

“Blackout” was made to accompany Sound Mirror imagery created by photographer Julian Hills in 1996 (for the packaging of the Disinformation “Antiphony” double remix CD, published in 1997). The “Blackout” video has been shown at The Royal College of Art (London),chirn Kunsthalle (Frankfurt), The Dom (Moscow), Galerie fur Zeitgennossische Kunst (Leipzig) and others, and exhibited at The Mac (Birmingham), CCCB (Barcelona), Quay Arts (Isle of Wight), Q Gallery (Derby), South Hill Park (Bracknell), The Waygood Gallery (Newcastle), The ICA (London), Event Gallery (London), Wrexham Arts Centre and The Latvian National Museum of Art.
