In this way the relatively slow aircraft of the time could be heard and located before they came into view.<\/p>\n<p>The microphone would have been fitted to the metal post set in a concrete block in front of the mirror. It is set back from the current coastline (which is eroding nearer every year), possibly to prevent the noise from waves breaking on the shore interfering with the operation of the mirror.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pic\"><a href=\"\/images\/mirror\/kilnsea2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"The Kilnsea sound mirror from the south in December 2001\" src=\"\/images\/mirror\/kilnsea2small.jpg\" alt=\"[Picture of the Kilnsea mirror from the south]\" width=\"350\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span class=\"footnote\">Photo: Andrew Grantham, December 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Other sound mirrors were built at <a title=\"Sound mirrors\" href=\"\/soundmirrors\/boulby\/\">Boulby<\/a>, <a title=\"Sound mirrors\" href=\"\/soundmirrors\/redcar\/\">Redcar<\/a>, <a title=\"Sound mirrors\" href=\"\/soundmirrors\/hartlepool\/\">Hartlepool<\/a>, <a title=\"Sound mirrors\" href=\"\/soundmirrors\/seaham\/\">Seaham<\/a> and <a title=\"Sound mirrors\" href=\"\/soundmirrors\/sunderland\/\">Sunderland<\/a>.
