{"id":6104,"date":"2015-03-22T17:10:05","date_gmt":"2015-03-22T17:10:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.andrewgrantham.co.uk\/afghanistan\/?p=6104"},"modified":"2015-03-22T17:10:05","modified_gmt":"2015-03-22T17:10:05","slug":"uzbek-railways-awarded-new-afghan-operations-and-maintenance-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.andrewgrantham.co.uk\/afghanistan\/uzbek-railways-awarded-new-afghan-operations-and-maintenance-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"Uzbek Railways awarded new Afghan operations and maintenance contract"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/images\/rail\/af-naibabad-2t116-first-revenue-train-to-mazarisharif-afghanistan-20120203-davidbrice1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/rail\/af-naibabad-2t116-first-revenue-train-to-mazarisharif-afghanistan-20120203-davidbrice1-small.jpg\" width=\"600\" title=\"First commercial train to Naibabad, east of Mazar-i-Sharif, on 3 February 2012 (Photo: David Brice).\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last year the Afghanistan Railway Authority <a href=\"\/afghanistan\/hairatan-to-mazar-i-sharif-railway-management-contracts-planned\/\">invited expressions of interest in contracts<\/a> to operate and maintain the <a href=\"\/afghanistan\/railways\/hairatan-to-mazar-i-sharif\/\">75 km railway from Hairatan to Mazar-i-Sharif<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>On 15 March 2015<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-6104-1' id='fnref-6104-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(6104)'>1<\/a><\/sup> Afghanistan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/mopw.gov.af\/en\">Ministry of Public Works<\/a> awarded Uzbek national railway <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uzrailway.uz\/uzb.html\">UTY<\/a> a new contract to operate and maintain the line.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-6104-2' id='fnref-6104-2' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(6104)'>2<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n<p>This contract replaces the original 2011 operating contract, which was worth worth $32m\/year. On 8 February 2011 UTY established its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sogdiana-trans.uz\">Sogdiana Trans<\/a> subsidiary to undertake operations and maintenance in Afghanistan.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-6104-3' id='fnref-6104-3' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(6104)'>3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The latest contract runs for three years and will see UTY paid $19m\/year to manage the line. UTY will pay taxes, and is to provide training for 50 Afghans each year.
