{"id":6043,"date":"2014-12-14T19:58:31","date_gmt":"2014-12-14T19:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.andrewgrantham.co.uk\/afghanistan\/?p=6043"},"modified":"2014-12-18T22:38:42","modified_gmt":"2014-12-18T22:38:42","slug":"five-countries-sign-china-to-iran-railway-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.andrewgrantham.co.uk\/afghanistan\/five-countries-sign-china-to-iran-railway-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"Five countries sign China to Iran railway agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/rail\/tj-fivecountries-201412.jpg\" title=\"China - Kyrgyzstan - Tajikistan - Afghanistan - Iran railway agreement signed\" class=alignright><\/p>\n<p>A preliminary agreement for developing the <a href=\"\/afghanistan\/china-to-afghanistan-via-tajikstan\/\">proposed China &#8211; Kyrgyzstan &#8211; Tajikistan &#8211; Afghanistan &#8211; Iran railway<\/a> was signed in the Tajik capital Dushanbe on 8-9 December 2014.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-6043-1' id='fnref-6043-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(6043)'>1<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n<p>The meeting was chaired by Tajikistan&#8217;s First Deputy Minister of Transport, Sherali Gan\u00e7alzoda, and included representatives of the transport ministries and authorities of the five countries. The attendees were updated on the current state of the railways, development plans, and the steps needed to connect the rail networks. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mintrans.tj\/tg\/news\/ba-imzorasii-protokol-oid-ba-masalai-paytvastshavii-rokhkhoi-okhani-hitoy-kirgiziston\">Ministry of Transport statement<\/a> doesn&#8217;t give much background (and is Tajik), but media reports say the route of the proposed line was agreed. Some reports seem to have got the list of places to be served a bit backwards, but they suggest the line would run from Kashgar in China to Herat in Afghanistan, then run on to Iran &#8211; presumably using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewgrantham.co.uk\/afghanistan\/railways\/iran-to-herat\/\">Khaf to Herat line which is currently under construction<\/a>.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-6043-2' id='fnref-6043-2' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(6043)'>2<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p>Launched the protocol of joining the 2100km railroad construction from China-Kyrgyz-Tajik-Iran through Afghanistan. <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/Hs2wF5wRKd\">pic.twitter.com\/Hs2wF5wRKd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Wahid Waissi (@WahidWaissi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WahidWaissi\/status\/545349642901151744\">December 17, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asiaplus.tj\/en\/news\/document-defining-rail-route-china-kyrgyzstan-tajikistan-afghanistan-signed-dushanbe\"><em>Asia Plus<\/em> reports<\/a> that Iranian company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metraconsult.ir\">Metra<\/a> has previously carried out a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asiaplus.tj\/en\/news\/iranian-company-submits-primary-reports-tajik-stretch-kashgar-heart-railway-mot\">feasibility study<\/a> for construction of the 392 km Tajik section of the proposed railway, using US$1m of aid.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-6043-3' id='fnref-6043-3' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(6043)'>3<\/a><\/sup> <sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-6043-4' id='fnref-6043-4' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(6043)'>4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><s>There is no mention of gauge in any of the reports.<\/s> The former Soviet countries and the small amount of railway in Afghanistan use 1520 mm broad gauge, but Iran and China both use standard gauge, and China seems to like building railways to standard gauge even in metre\/1067 mm gauge regions of Africa.
