[&#8230;] The two sides also agreed on establishment of rail links to connect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewgrantham.co.uk\/afghanistan\/tag\/torkham\/\">Torkham<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewgrantham.co.uk\/afghanistan\/tag\/jalalabad\/\">Jalalabad<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewgrantham.co.uk\/afghanistan\/tag\/chaman\/\">Chaman<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewgrantham.co.uk\/afghanistan\/tag\/spin-boldak\/\">Spin Bolduk<\/a><\/q>.<\/p>\n<p>This is <a href=\"\/afghanistan\/memorandum-for-kandahar-and-jalalabad-railways\/\">not the first time<\/a> the two railway projects have been reportedly agreed in some form. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/images\/rail\/af-map-kandahar-constable1893.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/rail\/af-map-kandahar-constable1893-quetta-kandahar.jpg\" alt=\"Quetta - Chaman - Kandahar railway map from 1893\" title=\"Proposed Quetta - Chaman - Kandahar railway on the 1893 edition of Constable's Hand Atlas of India\" class=\"alignright\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Building a Torkham &#8211; Jalalabad railway would require reinstating the washed away <a href=\"\/afghanistan\/railways\/khyber-pass-railway\/\">Khyber Pass railway<\/a> to join the new line to the rest of the Pakistan Railways network.<\/p>\n<p>A feasibility study for an extension of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ameerhamza\/5171506480\/\">existing railway to Chaman<\/a> across <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/frontline-chaman-pakistaniafghan-frontier--legacy-of-the-raj-fine-railways-and-lousy-borders-1075287.html\" title=\"Frontline: Chaman, Pakistan-Afghan frontier - Legacy of the Raj: fine railways and lousy borders\">border<\/a> to Spin Boldak was reportedly <a href=\"\/afghanistan\/quetta-to-kandahar-feasibility-study\/\">completed in 2010<\/a>, after a <a href=\"\/afghanistan\/chaman-spin-boldak-railway-progress-at-last\/\">flurry of interest in the project<\/a> in 2008-09. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"\/afghanistan\/chaman-spin-bodak-proposals-in-the-1960s\/\">concept goes back a long time<\/a>, with proposals for a <a href=\"\/afghanistan\/railways\/the-great-game\/\">line to Kandahar<\/a> in the nineteenth century.<\/p>\n<h3>Chaman station in 1900 and 2009<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/44191553@N07\/4061201126\/\" title=\"Railway station, Chaman, 1900 by beebagr baloch, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2596\/4061201126_a0de47fce7.jpg\" width=\"500\" alt=\"Railway station, Chaman, 1900\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/37374596@N03\/3443677707\/\" title=\"Chaman Station. by pakistanrailway.quetta, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3305\/3443677707_c45515c4b6.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Chaman Station.\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Karzai visited Pakistan&#8217;s Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on 26 August 2013.
