{"id":145,"date":"2007-07-09T19:47:14","date_gmt":"2007-07-09T19:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccgi.ajg41.plus.com\/2007\/07\/09\/khyber-pass-railway\/"},"modified":"2012-09-08T22:16:20","modified_gmt":"2012-09-08T21:16:20","slug":"khyber-pass-railway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.andrewgrantham.co.uk\/afghanistan\/khyber-pass-railway\/","title":{"rendered":"Khyber Pass railway history, and Bostan &#8211; Zhob revival?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doodhpatti.blogspot.com\"><cite>Doodh Patti &#8211; My Cup of Tea<\/cite><\/a> blog has an illustrated article on the <a href=\"http:\/\/doodhpatti.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/history-of-khyber-pass-railway.html\">history of the Khyber Pass railway<\/a>, which almost  &#8211; but not quite &#8211; ran to Afghanistan, stopping just short of the border.<\/p>\n<p>The July 2007 issue of <cite>Railway Gazette International<\/cite> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.railwaygazette.com\/news\/single-view\/view\/\/intelligence-july-2007.html\">reports<\/a> that Pakistan&#8217;s <q>government has authorised the acquisition of 584 acres of land required to rebuild to 1 676 mm gauge the 295 km mothballed 762 mm gauge railway between Bostan and Zhob, and construct a 150 km extension to Dera Ismail Khan. This would cut 400 km from the distance from Quetta to Peshawar by rail.<\/q><\/p>\n<p> If it ever happens, and who knows how likely that it, this line would be broadly parallel(-ish) to the Afghan border.
