  1. Dear Mr Jensen,

Thank you for your email and interest in our rail journey from Dar es Salaam to Lobito.

On any regular Rovos Rail journey we only travel at a maximum of 60km/h. The tracks in Tanzania and Zambia are irregularly maintained and we generally average around 40km/h in these countries.

Through the DRC we had planned our running times at 25km/h and managed to keep to a reasonable schedule despite frequent stops. Out of the 997kms we travelled in DRC, there are only two segments of approximately 40km each that were considered to be in a very bad state, but fortunately we managed to pass without incident on both occasions.

The Angolan line was newly rebuilt and opened in 2014/2015. The tracks are still in a very good condition and although we limited our speed to 45km/h, local trains easily reach up to 100km/h.

I hope that we may have the pleasure of welcoming you on board one of our journeys in the near future.

In the interim, please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further queries.

    Warm regards,

    Alicia
