… as radar technology was in its infancy, in Malta, the British authorities decided to build an early-warning system, the Parabolic Acoustic Mirror known as Il-Widna (ear), constructed at Ta’ San Pietru, Magħtab.

Il-Widna became outdated when the British government decided to install the first RDF [Radio Directing Finding] in Malta. It is important to say that this was to be the first RDF installed outside the UK.

A frequent visitor to Malta, ColorGrinder obtained permission to photograph the 200 ft sound mirror in Malta. His pictures are online at ‘Il Widna’ - The largest ear in Malta. They give a good indication of the surviving camouflage paint.

Il Widna - the Maltese sound mirror

The only sound mirror to be built outside England is a 200 foot example in Malta. When I visited the country earlier this year, I couldn’t miss out on the chance to go to see it.
